WARNING!!!!
In late 2008, we began watching a local cave system which is a few miles outside the Tri Cities area.
These caves are on private property and  we were told many times that desecrations had been taking place for many years.
I took it upon myself to hire a professional caver,  drew maps ,furnished him with a camera and sent him  to this undisclosed location to investigate it for me.

The series of caves were all located on one ridge, some 20 acres in  size. Much of the hill was limestone outcrop, devoid of trees and my caver had to trespass to accomplish his mission..
Some of the caves had been looted back in the 1960s and 70s and it can be noted that some famous artifacts were stolen from one of the smaller caves.
This small cave was entered first by my caver. He noted that the cave was completely cleaned down to solid rock and all the contents in way of dirt and human bone was all shoveled up onto the lower wall of the cave as if someone had sifted the entire contents.
The cave was trashed with names, dates, beer cans, bottles and cigarette butts. What a sad dishonor for the 35 some odd humans who were once interred there.(35 humans were interred in this cave according to research in the 1960s by the University of Virginia)

Cave #2 was of the most interest.
This cave was a shaft decending straight downwards some 150 feet with slick limestone walls.
Before entering this cave, my caver removed an old steel bar which was lying across the opening. This bar, we assume was used to tie a rope to so the grave robbers could navigate the sheer drop.
Upon reaching bottom, my caver immediately saw what can only be described as a horrible scene.
Human bones were scattered everywhere. Most of these bones, especially the long bones and skulls were chopped up as if someone had hacked at them with a shovel.
Below in the pictures, you can see the fragmented  bones.

My caver counted well over  one  hundred  long bones. These would be arm and leg bones. This indicates that many people were interred here and despite the depth, enterprising grave robbers had  removed everything and left the bones scattered like so much trash.

Suprisingly, some of these charlitans had written their names on the walls.

There were many more but most were not readable.
How galling that someone would treat these people like animals!!

If this is not enough to make you sick, it would be hard to imagine what would.

Do you see now why our people's bones must be protected?  These bones can no longer speak, it is our job to see to it that they are left alone.
Before leaving the depths of this cave, I instructed my caver to say a prayer for the dead and to leave a bundle of tobacco leaves I had prepared.
This is a sacred place and we must respect it as such.
These pictures of chopped up human bones speaks much louder than I even can.
There are many other caves on this same property that are filled with trash, dead cows, rusting cars and farm equipment. Many were no doubt  robbed many years ago when Native American burials were nothing more than money making opportunities for the greedy pot hunter.

Do you now see why we must stand up and fight for these bones? Do you want to leave this responsibility to those who cannot understand that these bones are on a sacred journey?
